I would like to take the time to write about something to plug the ownership of Dino’s Storage this month as opposed to trying to tell you why you should send all of your storage business my way! Yahoo or Google does not take the time to write articles about every admirable thing that every small business does, so I am going to tell you about the great things that Dino’s Storage ownership did this year for its employees. In a year when half of the nation is complaining about the Affordable Care Act, and how it will jeopardize their profits (and should even be appealed), and big companies saying they will no longer cover spouses as part of their benefit package the owner of Dino’s Storage, last year had an open enrollment, for ALL of it’s full time employees (over a year before it would have been required). They offered the employees 2 different plans, because all people have different needs, but both were top of the line coverage. As things ended up working out, the company could have waited another year before even making this option available, as small businesses received a year extension from their requirement! Instead, Dino’s Storage did a very noble thing…….they moved forward, as any leader would do……….made these benefits available, and now have a very grateful workforce. Every employee can do more positive work when he has fewer things to worry about outside of the workplace. So much for plugging Dino’s ownership………but if I was looking for a service (of any kind) it always helps me to make a business decision if I know the integrity of the people I am doing my business with. Good job Dino’s!!!!

Never Give Up…Dino’s Storage Keeps Their Vows

Definition of vow: a set of promises committing one to a prescribed role, calling or course of action, typically to marriage or a monastic career.
Breaking of vows is more common than most want to believe. Our society has developed the expectation that keeping our word isn’t a top priority, more of a minor detail. Take the airline companies for example, they overbook a large percent of their seats to compensate for expected no shows. I don’t understand how this is acceptable. Seldom have I heard someone say “my flight was overbooked” but more “they lost my luggage or we don’t get a drink/snack during flight any longer”. Which leads me to believe the reason why airlines overbook is because we are not sticking to our word on showing up. Other examples include business practices, sport teams, parenthood and marriage.
The generation of my great grandparents, keeping a vow was normal practice and an expectation of society. Those who would not keep their vows were shunned by others around them and commonly people would stop doing business with those. Evolution from that generation to the current one, is the fulfillment of a vow is conditional.
Dino’s Storage will not give up and or give into this practice. We value our customers and keep our vow to them. Ultimately Dino’s Storage wants to help people who have too much stuff. Whether that be for a minimal moment in time to organize a house that you want to put on the market or you want to preserve items for your future generations. Forbes Magazine has ranked Des Moines the #1 place for business and careers. Des Moines was the only metro city to rank in the top quartile for 9 of the 12 measures. In 2012, Des was ranked 4th, has finished in the top 10 since 2007 and also ranked #1 in 2010.
Des Moines offers businesses a skilled workforce with 36% of the population having college degrees and 92% high school diplomas. The metro is very attractive for young professionals and the business community is very active in supporting programs and organizations that engage them.

Dino’s In The Community — Making Strides
On May 4th I participated in the 2013 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Des Moines, IA. Our goal for the walk was to raise awareness as well as collect donations to benefit breast cancer research and to support all of the survivors as well as all of the woman who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The American Cancer Society has helped more than 4 million woman get breast cancer screening tests and there are over 2 ½ million survivors. I had the honor of being on the team of Miss Stasey, who is a breast cancer survivor. This particular event was very cold and rainy but that did not stop the dedicated participants from walking to support Making Strides. I wanted to do something special during the walk so I hand wrapped 110 flower suckers to hand out and remind people to smile. We were able to raise over $20,000 at this event alone!! I would like to give a very big thank you to Dave Paladino, the owner of Dino’s Storage, for his generous donation of $110 to support my fund raising goal.
Cancer of all forms has affected many lives. You may be a survivor or know someone who has cancer. Fact is that cancer is affecting more and more people and we need to do our part to schedule check-ups, maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly to help beat the odds. I personally know many people that have passed from cancer, a few that are currently going through treatments and thankfully those, like my father, that are in remission.

Advantages of Humidity Controlled Storage
Humidity plays a serious roll when you store your items. Humidity is the amount of water vapors in the air. One advantange of climate controlled storage is protection from the elements. Dirt and dust are less likly to get into the units. When storing items like pictures, apppliances, wood furniture, antiques, musical instruments, documents, memorabilia, family heirlooms, mattresses and other important items, it is best to use climate controlled and humidity controlled storage. If you live in an area with moderate to high levels of humidity and/or extreme temperatures, you would want to use a facility that is climate controlled and humidiy controlled. Even in an area with low moisture levels you would want to consider climate comtrolled storage. Humidity is a problem in both summer and winter. Humidity levels should be maintained at 55% plus or minus a few points and the temperature controlled at 68 to 72 degrees year round. With Dino’s Storage, your items will be kept in the same condition when you leave the facility as they were when you brought them to the facility. IS MY STUFF INSURED?
This is a question I get occasionally while helping people with their storage needs. Or some people don’t even think to ask about insurance coverage; they’ve never used storage before and it doesn’t occur to them to ask.
And most are surprised when I say the answer is No, ANY storage facility will tell you they do not insure the items you put in the building. In no way, shape, or form can we be responsible for the items in the facility. In the event of a tornado, fire, flood, storm damage, theft, etc, etc.; the proper insurance coverage is the responsiblity of the tenant. It’s similar to renting a home, apartment, or business space. Your landlord doesn’t insure your belonging in your apartment and a storage facility can’t insure your belongings in your storage space.
I always tell my new tenants if you have homeowner’s insurance don’t just assume your things are covered while in storage; every policy is different and some only cover contents that are in the actual home. So when you move those contents out the home and into a storage unit; you may have 10% of your policy coverage for those items; or worse yet, no coverage at all!! I advise calling your agent and asking about something called “off premise policies”. Tell them “these items are going into a storage facility, do I have my FULL policy coverage?”. Depending on your individual policy, you may need to add some sort of renter’s rider or additional coverage.
A general renter’s policy will most times be sufficient to cover your belongs in storage, but again, every policy is different. So if you haven’t, it is still a good idea to call your agent and make sure you have proper coverage.
While Dino’s Storage itself doesn’t insure your belongings; we do work with a company that does. Bader Company is a storage insurance company that offers month to month policies, same as your storage lease. If you don’t have existing coverage for your storage unit, don’t want to shop a policy on your own, or simply want additional coverage; ask your manager; it’s simple and the premium can be added to your monthly storage rent. If it’s worth storing, it’s worth insuring!!

Summer in the Storage Business
Summer can be a very busy time in the storage business. The weather is much better for us to all do our outside work, keep things outside neat and tidy, and finally enjoy our outside surroundings a lot more than we have been used to for months. Kids are out of school, so we have lots of extra free hands to help us with our chores. I consider it a great time to go through our yards and garages and de-clutter. Get rid of the things we no longer have use for, put things we are not going to use for awhile (snowblowers, shovels, ice picks…….you name it!) and put them into storage. The end result will be much more room in your garage, or maybe a clearer view from your deck, or maybe less obstacles in the back yard to mow around! Whatever the end result, you will be happy for many months to come that you finally took control of your seasonal possessions. Of course, lawnmowers, rakes, fertilizer spreaders, etc. all take up about the same space as that winter stuff did, so join the organized people of the world and come in and lease a storage unit in a size that works well for your needs.

Bondurant “On The Move”
Bondurant is located in the heart of central Iowa, right off I-80, with in minutes of I-35, and Hwy 65 runs through town. The town is a premier location for businesses and housing.
The city’s focus is on sustainable growth with a balance between residential, commercial, and park and recreational programs. In 2012, the new construction single family home valuation was $21,313,174 with 64 permits. This set a new record for the city. There was also 81 duplex permits issued. Commerical growth valuation was $2.3 million. A full-time Parks and Recreational Coordinator was hired by the city. Also, “The Depot” is about complete connecting Bondurant to the East Polk County Bike Trail System and Chichaqua Valley Trails. “The Depot” is an open air shelter with restrooms and a water bottle fill station. The building is a replica of the original Bondurant train station.
The City of Bondurant is on the move. Future development plans include a new apartment complex and new businesses are moving to town. This includes a new grocery which is in high demand by the residents. The city is in the final stages of connecting to Waterwaste Reclamation Authority and to removing the sewer lagoons to allow for more growth. New traffic lights will be installed at 32nd Street SW and Hwy 65. These are just a few of the exciting new development plans for Bondurant, many more are in the works.

DO YOU NEED CLIMATE CONTROLLED STORAGE?
Climate control is becoming more popular for storage. Items stored in a non climate controlled environment depend on outside weather conditions. In Nebraska we have cold, heat, and humdity which will often cause items to deteriorate. Not only are climate controlled units important in eliminating weather problems but the amount of dust your things are exposed to. Recently I had a tenant tell me that after 2 years storing in the climate control he had very little dust on his belongings. Before putting your items in storage you should think which items would benefit from climate controlled storage.
Climate control is good for items that are valuable or made of high quality material. One example is a mattress that can mold and mildew when exposed to the elements. Heat can lead to discoloration and deterioration of good clothing. Humidity is a probelm both in the summer and winter. Musical instruments often warp, crack, and break in non climatecontrolled units Electronics are very sensitive to moisture. Paper, books, and pictures can discolor, warp, and mildew when exposed to weather conditions over a period of time.
Take time to think before storing. Climate controlled units are not needed just for china, antiques, and leather but anything that is valuable to you.
